In Memory of Derry Appleton
July 5, 1931 – July 14, 2025
Derry was born and raised in Kelowna, lived in Cranbrook, and has been a resident of Kamloops for 65 years. He passed away in Kamloops on July 14, 2025. He was employed at CPR Telecommunications, B.C. Tel, owner of Superior Kitchens, and retired from B.C. Lottery.
In his youth he played almost every sport, and being active was a life-long priority. A highlight was sharing a locker room with Olympic star Jesse Owens at an event in Kelowna. He was an early member of the Kamloops Ski Club, with a rope tow where Costco now stands. He was one of a few invited to ski the slopes of Tod Mountain before it opened, now known as Sun Peaks, and was an instructor there for many winters. He gave up his season’s pass at age 82.
Derry was a man of many interests and talents. He gave community service as a volunteer firefighter and member of the Lions Club in Cranbrook and Kamloops. He participated in theatre productions and was a leading role in the cast that represented B.C. and Alberta in the Canadian Dominion Drama Festival in Charlottetown in 1967. For a while he took up painting, public speaking, and calligraphy. He also enjoyed to travel.
Derry was a member of the Kamloops Flying Club and later the wood worker’s guild. He could repair or build anything and with his large tool collection, he helped many neighbours during the seasons he lived at Shuswap Lake. His grandchildren and great grandchildren slept in two cradles he built; many children have received wood toys and trucks, and family and friends cherish his carved bowls and jewelry boxes. His garden was the envy of everyone, reflecting his passion for being meticulous.
Derry is predeceased by his parents Bill and Georgina Appleton, his step father Earl Gibeau, sister Jean (Rob) Serviss, and brother Billy. He is survived by his wife Deanna, and his daughters Pam (Brian) Ames and Joan (Kavin) Nilssson, and Deanna’s children Darren (Barb), Deidre, and Dana Lee. He has 14 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
At his request, there will be no services.
